Total-Body PET: A Game-Changer in Cancer Imaging

Total-Body PET-CT scan technology at Healius Cancer and Haematology Clinics in Bangalore.

By Dr. Mangesh Kamath, Healius Cancer and Haematology Clinics

At Healius Cancer and Hematology Clinic, our focus is on offering patients the most advanced, precise, and comfortable diagnostic experience possible. As a leading PET CT scan center in Bangalore, we are dedicated to utilizing the latest medical innovations to improve patient outcomes.

One such innovation transforming cancer care today is the Total-Body PET-CT scan available at Healius Clinic. This breakthrough technology allows us to see the entire body in a single, quick, and highly detailed image, providing a level of diagnostic clarity that was previously unavailable. By choosing our specialized facility, patients gain access to faster scan times and significantly lower radiation doses, ensuring a safer and more efficient path to accurate diagnosis.

What Is a PET-CT Scan?

A PET-CT combines two imaging techniques:

  • PET (Positron Emission Tomography): shows how active or “metabolically alive” tissues are.
  • CT (Computed Tomography): provides detailed anatomical structure.

Before the scan, a small amount of a glucose-based tracer (F-FDG) is injected into a vein. Cancer cells use more glucose than normal cells, so they appear brighter on the scan — helping doctors detect and map disease activity.

From Conventional to Total-Body PET

Type of PET

Body Coverage

Scan Time

Highlights

Total-Body PET

Whole body (~200 cm)

~5 minutes

Complete coverage in one session; faster and clearer results

Whole-Body PET (LAFOV)

About half body (~100 cm)

~20 minutes

Good sensitivity; moderate coverage

Conventional PET (SAFOV)

Limited area (~15–30 cm)

~20 minutes

Traditional method; longer and less detailed

Key Benefits of Total-Body PET

  • Speed and Comfort – The scan is completed in about 5 minutes, reducing the discomfort of lying still for long periods.
  • Lower Radiation Exposure – The technology’s high sensitivity means smaller tracer doses are required.
  • Sharper Images – Detects smaller or early disease changes that might be missed on conventional PET.
  • Comprehensive Assessment – Captures the entire body in one go, allowing better tracking of treatment response and disease spread.
  • Ideal for Follow-Up – Helps your oncology team evaluate how well your therapy is working quickly and accurately.

What Patients Can Expect

  • You will receive a small injection of the F-FDG tracer.
  • After resting for about an hour, the scan begins — it takes only around five minutes.
  • The process is painless, and you can usually resume normal activities soon afterward.

The Total-Body PET-CT represents a major step forward in precision cancer imaging. It offers faster scans, lower radiation, and a complete view of your body in one examination — improving both comfort and accuracy.

At Healius Cancer and Haematology Clinics, we continue to adopt innovations like Total-Body PET to ensure every patient receives the best diagnostic care possible — because early, accurate detection makes all the difference.
